Sun Orange one of five THANDIâ„¢ projects

[Article taken from Capespan COURIER – April 2003]

Sun Orange Farm, a 240 hectare citrus and persimmon farm in the Sunday’s River Valley of the Eastern Cape, is one of five projects that will initially deliver fruit for the THANDI™ Initiative.

Sun Orange Farm is the brainchild of two Sunday’s River growers, Johnny Ferreira and James Hannah. It is a joint venture between Sun Orange Employees’ Trust, the Industrial Development Corporation, Johnny Ferreira and James Hannah.  The Trust will eventually have a share of 40% in the development, and James Hannah and Johnny Ferreira 30% each.

Sun Orange Farm will benefit from the latest technology as the development of nearly 200 hectares of new orchards gradually gathers momentum.  James Hannah says an open hydroponics and drip irrigation system allows for optimum water and fertiliser application.  “We cannot control the elements, but in terms of water we are able to manage our plants effectively.”

The full investment in the project will be R35 million.  “Currently Sun Orange Farm has 44 hectares bearing citrus and by the end of the year we will have planted the rest of the trees.”

There are presently eight members of the trust and they are all permanent employees.  As the project grows, new Trust members will be added.
