THANDIâ„¢ lands first Fairtrade apples and citrus in UK
[Article taken from Capespan COURIER – October 2003]
The first Fairtrade citrus and apples to be supplied from South Africa by the THANDI™ Initiative arrived on the shelves of UK retailers at the end of July. Fairtrade branded pre-packs of oranges were sold in stores of the British retailer COOP during the last week of July and oranges, apples and lemons also arrived on the shelves of Tesco soon afterwards.
The Capespan Foundation says it is pleased that its THANDI™ Initiative to support the export of fruit from empowerment farms in South Africa has developed to the extent that the first fruit can now be offered to British consumers. The fruit was produced on three farms in South Africa’s Western and Eastern Cape provinces, which were recently certified by the Fairtrade Labelling Organisation. These farms are Sun Orange Farm in the Sunday’s River Valley, Misgund Landgoed in the Langkloof and THANDI™ Farm at Elgin.
Fairtrade is a trading partnership that seeks greater equity in international trade by offering better trading conditions to and securing the rights of marginalized farmers and workers in the developing world. More than 130 retail products in the United Kingdom now carry the FAIRTRADE Mark, including coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate, snacks and biscuits, sugar, honey, fruit juice en fresh fruit.
