The Fairtrade Certification Body has accredited three THANDI™Initiative projects in South Africa. It is the first time that Fairtrade has certified projects for the production of pome fruit and citrus anywhere in the world.
“This is a tremendous breakthrough for the THANDI™ initiative, “says Dr Kevin Chambers, who is responsible for coordinating the project at Capespan. The THANDI™ Initiative is supporting the marketing of fresh produce from empowerment projects and is aimed at assisting with the land transformation process in South Africa.
The negotiation process with the Fairtrade Organisation started in May last year and concluded with inspection visits to the three projects during May this year. The three empowerment projects which have received accreditation, are Sun Orange Farm in the Sunday’s Rive Valley, Misgund Landgoed in the Langkloof and the Lebanon Farm, also known as THANDI™ farm, in Elgin.
“Exports under the Fairtrade label can now go ahead for this season,” says Dr Chambers. “The first fruit will be shipped to Europe during the next month.”
